Happy Birthday!!!

Dylan and I have been hanging out with Travis' BBF's (Best Boyfriend Forever) wife and daughter, Amy and Kaylee quite a bit these past few days. Sweet little Kaylee isn't really on a schedule and also wasn't napping too consistantly. So after talking to Amy about Dylan's schedule and how good it is for them (and US!) to have structure and routine, etc., Amy enlisted my help in getting Kaylee on a good schedule, including being able to take a good long nap in the middle of the day (she was just nodding off in 15-20 minute intervals on her mom or on car rides, etc.) Now, I'm no 'Supernanny' and I will be the first to admit that, but thanks to advice and help from my good friend Cherish, I'd like to think Dylan has a pretty good routine and sleep schedule down pat. BUT, before he got on that schedule, I remember feeling completely clueless as to where to even begin. What I ended up doing was mimicing Cherish and her daughter Autumn's schedule daily, until Dylan was doing the same routine. So, I suggested the same for Amy and Kaylee. Because Kaylee likes to nod off during stroller walks and car rides though, we've been staying pretty close to home. Going on wagon walks around the block to the playground, playing in the backyard, etc.

Oh by the way, on Sunday after trying to attend service (that was cancelled due to a close call with an electrical fire), we went to grab a bite to eat. We got caught up in conversation and didn't realize the reason Dylan was being so quiet.....

Yeah, that would be ranch all over his church clothes!

Love this picture of Kaylee!

So today was/is a very special day. It's two of the most wonderful men I knows birthday. My big brother, Sean and my amazing husband, Travis. Yep, they share the same birthday! I knew it was meant to be :) They are exactly one year apart. Travis turned 28 and my brother turned 29.....meaning next year is the big 3-0 broham!
Anyway, if you know my husband, you know that he is a big kid in a man's body. When it comes to anything involving gifting for him, he lights up like a Christmas tree. And because of his overwhelming excitement, he was able to guilt me into letting him open his presents a day early!
Dylan was his present! Just kidding, it's the camo gear and turkey decoys!Trying to get Dylan to give the turkey kisses
And then his ACTUAL birthday came (today) so we had.....
CAKE! That Dylan worked really hard on, give the kid a break, he's only two! We had a delicious dinner too. His choice; steak, fried potatoes, beans, pasta salad, and cheesy garlic bread. We had Miss Kaylee (and mom and dad) overJonathon (Travis' BBF) and KayleeAfter dinner, we walked across the street to the park to let the kids play and then went home for cake. Overall, I think it was a pretty good birthday for Travis. I still don't think any birthday can top the one that him, Dylan and my parents put together for my 27th (nice, mellow, low key night at home with a fabulous dinner and cake!), but Travis said he had a good night, so that's all that matters! :) Happy Birthday Travis!!!!!
(Sporting all of his new stuff- he's been getting really into turkey hunting these days, so Dylan got him all decked out and ready to go!)

All Talk, No Pics :(

So unfortunately I don't have pictures today....wait, wait, don't leave though! It'll be a quick post, I promise! :)

Friday we had a CRAZY wind storm. The sustained winds were about 45mph and the gusts were getting up to 85mph. And being that we are right next to the White Sands National Monument, the entire sky looked tan. If you didn't know any better, you would've thought it was a gloomy day out or something. But underneath all that sand flying around, it was clear blue skies.

A little wind didn't stop us though, we had plans to go to Red Lobster! After Trav got off work, we drove the 45 minutes to Las Cruces and had a very nice triple date with our friends, Jonathon and Amy (the triple part was Dylan and Kaylee). I have never been to Red Lobster before, or if I have I absolutely don't remember it (my parents seem to recall taking us there a time or two on various vacations), but the commercials always look sooooo good.....and I'm not even a huge seafood eater! I've asked Travis to take me there a couple times before, but he really just didn't care too much to eat it. He's always said, it's okay but it's not great. Luckily for me though, my friend Amy, loves Red Lobster and her husband Jonathon, at least LIKES Red Lobster. So when it came up in conversation that I had never been, it was on!
Dinner was GOOD! I mean no, is it fresh Alaskan salmon or halibut? No. Is it fresh flounder or shrimp? Probably not. But it was good, to me at least!
I would love to open up a restaurant that served bite sized portions for everything on the menu. So that way you could go in and basically eat just about everything on the menu that sounded good to you. Since I'm not sure of any restaurants like that (other than the tappas restaurant in Anchorage, Cafe Savannah I think?), I settled for ordering a few appetizers. We all shared the lobster artichoke dip and then I ordered lobster nachos and mango-jalapeno shrimp skewers (which were delicious!).

Anyway, overall it was a good call on all of our parts. Even Travis loved his peppercorn steak and shrimp combo he ordered. Dylan was EXTREMELY well behaved (well, for a two year old's standards- let's just put it this way, no one was pelted with crayons or his sippy cup and we didn't have to tell him to sit down once, so I would say that's a success!). Dylan's appetite was also a major shocker. He ate several bites of his chicken tenders, french fries, a cheddar biscuit, and just about everything else we gave him to try. I was amazed. He must be going through a growth spurt.

Today I was invited to a "Tastefully Simple" party at Hollie's house. Amy and I went together, so Jonathon and Kaylee came over to hang out with Travis and Dylan. They went to the bow shop together in Tularosa and then came home to watch a lot of hunting, while us girls had a very good time sampling some good dips, sauces, spices, and breads....oh, and a few drinks!
I probably ordered more than I should've, but my weakness (other than cookies and brownies) are sauces and dips and yeah well, that's at least 1/2 to 3/4 of what's in the catelog!
The beer bread was AMAZING, so of course I ordered some of that, along with some bayou bourbon glaze, spicy honey mustard, sweet jalapeno sauce (that I can't wait to put over some cream cheese!), a trio pack of spices, zezty peppercorn sauce, and some fudge brownie mix that almost all of the ladies swore by! Mmmmmm......sound tempting yet? Well, here's the website in case you're interested in finding out more about hosting a party or even just browsing through the items they sell http://www.tastefullysimple.com/Cultures/en-US/
Anyway, it was fun. It was nice getting out of the house and having some girl time. Thanks again Hollie!

Tomorrow we are going to be going to church and then the boys are going to go have some "man time" shooting their bows. Fun stuff....or, not!

Sorry, I don't have pictures this time. I know it probably wasn't as fun, but what can I say, I'm lame! I made sure I brought my camera to almost everything we did, but I was just too lazy to snap pics! Next post though, I promise I'll get it together!

Anyway, good night! We are officially heading to bed!

"Cheeseburger!"

So as I mentioned in my post yesterday, we had Amber and her kids, Eli and Izzy over for a gluten free dinner last night. I made an apple-cranberry stuffed pork roast, mashed sweet potatoes for Amber and me (Travis wont touch them with a ten foot poll), and a salad. For the kids we made pigs in a blanket, mac n' cheese, and salad (those kids all love their salads, as long as they have ranch, they're good!).
Amber is on a strict gluten-free diet due to Celiacs. Her husband is gone a lot for work so she doesn't make 'big meals' all that often because half of the stuff that she would make for her husband and kids, she can't eat, so why make a big dinner if it's just her kids eating it? You can't expect a 3 and 4 year old to polish off a casserole! And really, even if she could eat it, without your spouse there to help you with the leftovers, it usually just ends up going to waste. I totally get it. There have been nights that it's just been Dylan and me for dinner and usually I just end up fixing Dylan whatever I have on hand and I just snack on little stuff here and there, or eat a salad, or whatever. So anyway, since Amber found out she had to go gluten-free, she has been living pretty much on salads. I figured it would be nice to fix her a MEAL that she could actually eat and then not feel bad about having too much and possibly wasting leftovers. The food was good.
As long as she wasn't lying to me, Amber enjoyed the pork and the sweet potatoes. As did I. Travis wasn't the biggest fan, but that didn't come as a shocker to me. He's not really a fan of meat that is sweet in any sort of way and with the apple-cranberry chutney, it was definitely sweet- and a little sour. So Travis ate around the chutney and then had a salad and some mac n' cheese. Eli, Izzy, and Dylan practically polished off all of their food. I was extremely impressed. And something else I was impressed with, was the fact that Dylan actually sat there and ate without getting up. I was worried that Dylan was going to be a bad influence on these kids while they were trying to eat, because usually when we have company over (and especially when some of that company are his friends) he tends to be so busy wanting to play, that he won't sit down and eat. But he sat there. The only time he got up was when Izzy was done eating and got up. He followed her, but quickly returned to finish eating. So it turns out, their good meal time behavior and great appetites proved to be a GOOD influence for Dylan. Maybe we should have them over for dinner more often!
After dinner we sat around and talked for a while and the kids played. We caught up with them after a while in Dylan's room and they were being silly. Eli was showing us some tricks, Izzy was just having a blast with all new toys, and Dylan was trying to copy Eli's tricks.

Eli started out by showing us a few of his push up and crunch moves and then moved on to head stands. That's about the time I grabbed the camera....
Photobucket
Dylan kept trying to get his feet up there and got pretty close at one point, but anytime Trav would try to help him out, he would get scared and want down!
Photobucket
He was jumping down from his head stand position or something. Whatever he was doing, I missed the picture I was trying to get, but got a pretty good action shot instead.

Izzy wanted in on the fun....

At least for a little bit. Like I said, she was mostly just having fun with all the toys that were new to her.

Eli is such a good 'big brother' to Dylan. It's like he knows he's littler so he has to look out for him, but at the same time he plays with him, includes him, and has fun with him when they are together. I just love Eli!

That was so sweet. He took a quick break from all the fun, walked over to Amber, sat down on her lap and said, "I love you Mom". Then came some momma lovin!!! He may love his momma AND be able to say it in public, but he's still too cool for smooches!

Anyway, we had a good night. Dylan went to bed a little later than normal, but that was okay. He had fun and so did we, so that's all that mattered.
As Travis was settling Dylan down and getting him all tucked into bed, he was trying to teach Dylan his name. I very lightly heard him in there repeating, "Dylan, Gage, Ramey" (in his Dylan way) after Travis would say each of them. He did this twice before I ran for the video camera. UNFORTUNATELY he caught eye of one of the 500 toys he sleeps with in his bed and got distracted. So typical. I got 3 videos, but you can't clearly hear him saying it in any of them. On the last one though, he caught me with the camera and started saying, "CHEEEESE!" It was cute, but not what I was aiming for.

Today, Amber, her friend Katie (who was also stationed here from Alaska, (there are quite a few of us!), Amy, Hollie and all of our kids met at The Bounce Place for a little playdate. We chose Wednesday, just like last time because it is supposed to be for kids 6 and under, but apparently some of the parents didn't get that memo, or staff either. The place was busy because it's spring break and there were (much older) kids running around not paying any attention to the little ones. Oh well, what can you do. We didn't let it spoil our kids' fun, we just had to keep a close eye on them to make sure they weren't getting bullied or knocked down.

Dylan was like a crazy person in that car. Well, any of those cars you see in the picture really. He was totally hogging them and if he was getting ready to get out of the car, but saw another kid coming over to get in it, or even just looking in the direction of the car as he was thinking about getting out, he would quickly close the door and take off!

Sweet little Kaylee.....

Not a great picture, but it's the only one I got with Parker in it (Hollie's son)! It was hard keeping up with all of them! And I realized after we got done that I didn't get one single picture of Eli or Izzy. I'm telling you, they were all over the place!

Kaylee climbing up the slide

After we got done at The Bounce Place we were all pretty hungry, so we stopped at McDonald's for a quick bite to eat and a little more play time for Eli, Izzy, and Dylan....

So remember how earlier I mentioned I missed a great opportunity to get a video of Dylan repeating his name? Well, I did miss a good video of it, but he did learn another new word last night as Amber was trying to get Izzy to pose for a picture and I did happen to catch that...

Get Them!

Last night I purchased a Shark Steam Clean Mop! We went to the store last night and strictly for groceries. I honestly did not plan on getting it (yet), but I've been hearing about this mop for a few weeks now from a few different people and how nice it is. The last one being yesterday from Amber and she confirmed everything I had been hearing. I was going to wait a bit though to get one. Maybe test out my friend Amy's that she just bought and then get it later if I liked it. We were there though and it was on sale for $20 off. SCORE! Of course I couldn't pass up that deal, so we went ahead and got it.

I was like a kid with a new toy. Funny I know, but I get that way with cleaning supplies. I don't know what it is. There was one day a few weekends back where we spent three hours shopping in Las Cruces and all we really left there with was some items for Dylan and a trunk full of cleaning supplies (to include my Electrolux Stick Vac!). I was so excited the whole way home about all of our purchases, but then I kept reminding myself, "It's just cleaning supplies, a normal person should not be this happy about cleaning supplies..."

Anway, I quickly put the groceries away last night and then immediately started putting my mop together to test it out. I was kind of hoping it was cordless, but at least the cord is long. Like really long. The verdict? I love it!

The things I LOVE about this mop:

A. I don't have to use chemicals for it to sanitize the floor
B. I don't have to change out the pad after each room I mop
C. I don't have to keep a bucket of mop water on hand or keep going to the sink to rinse the sponge
D. It dries so quickly that even if Dylan is awake when I'm using it, I'm not too worried about his little footprints running across.

I used the mop on my entire living room, dining room, and kitchen and didn't have to rinse the pad once! When I got done, I took it off, squirted some soap on it, hand washed it a bit and now it's ready for it's next use!

Even Dylan had fun! I think he got a kick out of the steam that would come out. He would run around it and say, "Clean. Momma, clean!" and then laugh everytime it steamed.

If you have all wood or tile floors, or just a lot of wood or tile floors in your house and you don't already have an Electrolux Stick Vac and/or the Shark Steam Mop, get them! Trust me, you'll never look at cleaning the same.
Thank you so much Amy and Amber for the recommendation!

A Good Weekend Had By All....

I just started this blog and I'm probably already losing like all three readers I have due to the lack of posts! I have been trying to get it done since Sunday, but one thing kept leading to another and now here it is, 1:00pm on Tuesday! I opened with that picture of a cute little man in hopes that you'll get distracted by his smile enough to forgive me?
I actually opened this up last night and started typing a little, but my eyes kept blurring out because I was so tired. I barely had the energy to shut down my laptop before I rolled over and crashed out....and it was only 9;30! This 5:30 shift of Travis' has really started to make us 'early to bed, early to rise' type of people.
So onto this past weekend.....

Friday night we decided to just hang around the house doing what we do best, nothing! We put some steaks and onions on the grill, sauteed up some mushrooms, made some super tasty garlic cheesy bread, threw together a salad, and had ourselves a pretty delicious dinner! I'm not typically a steak person. I could take 'em or leave 'em and usually when I take 'em, I prefer to douse them in steak sauce. This time though, Trav was able to guilt me into trying a bite before adding sauce and oh man I'm so glad I did! It was so perfectly seasoned and marinated and then brushed with this salad dressing/marinade I had him throw on it. It was juicy and flavorful and seriously, steak sauce would've ruined it. Just thinking about it is making my mouth water right now! And the bread! The bread was just as I was hoping it would be when I found the recipe. Tell me this doesn't look good.....

I absolutely love our cheap little Wal-Mart patio set. I mean, ultimately I would love to have one of those comfy looking $600 patio sets, with the COUCH and fire pit in the middle of the coffee table, but right now we have no room, not to mention the money for it! Anyway, I enjoy spending every sunny evening out there eating dinner. And that Aloe plant as our center piece, Trav picked it out. He planted it and added the decorative rocks (aka rocks from our rock bed) all on his own. It gave our patio such a cute little southwest look. Good job Trav!

After I was done falling in love with my steak, we noticed that the sky went from blue to tan pretty quickly. The wind gusts we had been having grew stronger and well, what happens in the desert when you get 60-70 mph winds? A sand storm, right! evidently windy days in the spring are very normal down here and we've definitely been having them, but Friday was by far the windiest I've seen it. We decided to take in anything we thought would blow away because it was getting that bad! Well, except Dylan's sleeve to his camp chair. It blew away before we got out there. R.I.P Blue Camp Chair Sleeve, you will be missed ....

Saturday, Travis and his co-worker/friend/hunting buddy, Jonathon went to go scout out some possible hunting areas and while they were doing that, Dylan and I met up with Amy and Kaylee (Jonathon's wife and one year old daughter) at McDonald's playland for lunch. It's so sad how my son gets so excited to see the 'Golden Arches'. At first when we would drive past them and he would say, "eat, eat!" I thought he was telling me he was hungry. So if we didn't have plans for lunch or dinner and it was about that time, I would stop and get him some nuggets. If we were going to be eating soon, I would tell him, "Buddy, we're getting ready to eat soon". It wasn't until recently though, that I discovered he thinks McDonald's name, is 'Eat'. It started slowly making sense. Like there would be times when he would literally just get done eating (a good sized portion of food too) and he would see the arches and say, "eat, eat!" and sometimes it was chicken nuggets from "eat, eat!" that he had just eaten and then would see the bag, or our drink cup and he'd say it. So I put the two and two together. I'm guessing he learned that from the times I would take him there for a play date and I would say, "Do you want to go eat buddy?" Not sure, but it's funny. Since then though I've been trying to teach him that it's "McDonald's", but all I've really ever gotten him to say is, "Donald's" in his Dylan way.

So anyway, lunch with Amy and Kaylee was good. Dylan behaved pretty well and of course, so did Kaylee. I miss that age when it comes to eating out. They are usually just so content eating and/or playing with little hand toys you give them, that you can usually get through a meal without too much fuss. We ate and then let the kids play for a bit. It was pretty crowded and the older kids were just running all over not really paying any attention to the younger ones, so we decided to take off.
After we left, Amy had invited Dylan and I over after Dylan woke up from his nap, but I knew since he was going down a little later than normal, it would probably be pretty close to the guys getting home and dinner time by the time he woke up, so I just invited them over to grill out. They came over around 4 and we just grilled some chicken, let the kids play, talked, and let the guys watch their hunting! Both kids were getting extremely tired so at about 8 or so they headed home and we all called it a night. We were tired too!

Sunday was such a good day. For the past year or maybe a little more I've been feeling this need to go to church. I wasn't raised in church or in a religious family. My parents believe in God, but I think they always just felt like they didn't need to go to church on Sundays to confirm their belief. They never denied me of exploring that option though. In fact, my Mom had a really good friend who did go to church with her family every Sunday and she invited us with them to several of their Easter and Christmas services and we would go. I was very young though and only have vague memories of it. I also had a good friend in elementary school who's parent's went to church every Sunday and I would go with her once or twice a month. The biggest thing I remember about that though, was the breakfast or lunch we got to go eat afterwards.
As I got older I knew that if at anytime I wanted to start going to church, all I would have to do is ask my parents (if I needed a ride) or just go once I got old enough to drive myself. But being that it was never forced upon me and that I was young and 'had better things to do' (or so I thought), I just never did.
Ever since having my own child though, I have felt like this is something that I need to make a part of my life. And I eventually want it to be fully introduced to Dylan and any future children we may have. I will never force it on him though, I will never make church a dreaded thing and as he gets older if he decides it isn't for him, then I wont push it. But for now, I want him to know the option is out there and open that door for him, that I never fully had opened for me.
In what seems like perfect timing, our friends Amy and Jonathan told us about their church they found here. We were going to go with them that first weekend they had mentioned it, but I had already planned on going out of town, so we decided to join them their first weekend back after vacation, which was this past Sunday.
I was nervous. Nervous because I don't know anything. Nervous because I was going to be putting Dylan in daycare and how was he going to react. Nervous because I didn't want these people to judge me for being a newcomer- to their church and to church in general. But let me tell you, from the moment we walked in the door I felt at ease. I never once felt like an outsider. The women registering Dylan were extremely nice and made me and him feel welcomed right away. And the lady watching Dylan's classroom made me feel even better. She told me we could leave whatever we needed to make him feel comfortable (i.e., his blanket!), she said I could leave his own snacks, but they had pretzels and juice that they give, etc. She just welcomed him in without any hesitation. We were a bit early, so Dylan was the first and only kid when we arrived. I thought, 'Oh man, how are we going to sneak out of here when it's just us, him, and this lady?!' We didn't have to. He walked right in there and immediately started playing with the toys. He didn't even look back at us as we left. I mean, obviously he felt comfortable with the situation or he wouldn't have let us out of his sight, but part of me wonders if this was meant to work out this way, you know? Like it was a sign. It felt right immediately. So onto the service. I won't go into too much detail, not knowing what everyones beliefs are on this subject, but I will tell you this. The Pastor was so energetic and funny, but in a very respectable way. Anytime he would use his personal experiences to reference something, he would make it entertaining, but never went overboard or too far with the story. He kept us all paying attention and wanting to hear more. The scriptures were displayed up on a big screen for those of us without Bibles (me), so that was nice. The music was lively and the sermon on Sunday, really felt like it was meant for me specifically. It was like they knew I would be there, so they chose to cover this specific subject. I left feeling refreshed and very good about our decision to join Amy and Jonathon. After the service, we headed out to pick up Dylan. There was a bit of a traffic jam exiting so it took us a while to get to him. And then once we got to the hallway where all of the classrooms are, there were huddles of parents preventing outside greeting their children, which made it even harder to make our way to the classroom. It was pretty funny though because we were pretty much the last parents to arrive (all of the other parents of kids in that class were standing outside the door chatting, so at one point I had to sort of pry my way through) and there was Dylan standing right by the door kind of like, "Okay, what's going on here? I see all these parents, where the heck are mine?" He was all smiles though. He wasn't distraught or crying or upset one bit. He was just kind of waiting. I picked him up and he said, "MOMMY!" and then I said, "Hey buddy, there's Daddy!" and he said, "Hi Daddy!". It was so sweet.

After church we were starving, so we all went down and had lunch at this pizza place called "The Old Pizza Mill and Sub Factory" we've been hearing a lot about. It's no Moose's Tooth, but it was some pretty good pizza! Just some good ol' from scratch, pizza. It reminded me of something you would get in like New York or something. Oh, and we got ours with green chilis on it! If you've never had green chilis on a pizza, I highly recommend you trying it! It was SOOOO good! You have to love green chilis though. We do. A lot. Probably a good thing since we live in the green chili capital of the world!
On the drive home Travis and I discussed how we felt about the service. I told him how much I enjoyed it and all of the reasons why. I can't wait until next weekend. I obviously want to check it out a few more times before I decide, but if I continue to feel this way and same with Travis, I would love for us to become members. I would also like to look into Bible study on Wednesday nights. I need to know more. I remember my friend Cherish mentioning in her blog that she was reading a book called, "30 Days to Understanding the Bible". I looked it up on Amazon and read through the first few pages and think I'm going to look into getting it. Just to kind of help me better understand. Because I have no clue.
In the end, I would say it was a good weekend had by all!
So, I booked our airline tickets (mine and Dylan's) back up to Alaska! Thank you SO very much Mom & Dad for providing mileage for one of the tickets! We wouldn't be heading up there if it weren't for you. Travis has that training I was telling you about so we figured this would be a good opportunity to head up there and visit. It will probably be the only opportunity we have to head up there until about January, so I am glad that it worked out. We will be getting into Anchorage April 9th and then we head back home on May 5th. So just about an entire month! Travis' training is from April 12th through May 3rd so I planned our visit around him being able to drop us off and pick us up.

Dylan helping me book our airline tickets, or not really actually. He was more so just tearing the room apart and playing in our box o' pens!

Tonight we are having Amber and her kids over for a gluten-free dinner (Apple Cranberry Stuffed Pork Roast) and tomorrow a few of us are getting together for a play date at The Bounce Place. Not sure what our plans are beyond that, (until next weekend that is, but we will save that for when it gets closer) so I guess we will just play it by ear!

I will try to start getting better about taking more pictures, but for now I hope you enjoyed the few I put up.
I'm starting to think we don't have enough toys in this house for him? First the box of pens and now the laundry basket? Hmmm......cheap entertainment I guess! I actually have a really cute video of him sliding around in the basket, but I can't get the attachment to open in the email.

Catching You Up

I've had this blog site for quite some time now and it's just been sitting here empty. I signed up for it because I thought I had to have it in order to stalk, er um, I mean "keep up with" my good friend Cherish's (fabulous) blog posts. Turns out I could've been doing it in stealth mode this whole time, but whatever! So I decided since I have it, I will use it to sort of do what Cherish does. Keep my friends and family up to date on our lives. Life gets busy and I know we don't all always have time to make the phone calls or send the emails to keep in touch, so this way you guys can sort of know whats going on with us. I am going to try to post something ever couple of days, to once a week at the least.
So here we go.....
Bare with me because this one is LONG. I'm doing a little 'catch up' from the time we left Alaska until now, for those that I haven't talked to very much (or at all) since we've been here, and I did not succeed in keeping it brief. But the good news is, if you don't have the time to read it all, or you don't want to read it at all- you don't have to! No one is forcing you ;)
If you do however have a little bit of time to spare and would like to take a look back at what's been going on with us up until now as well as look at some pictures, I would love it and hope you enjoy!
So we left Alaska in January for our new duty station, Holloman AFB, NM. Travis and my Dad left Jan. 16th, five days before Dylan, my mom, and I did. They drove down to Haines and jumped on the ferry that took them down to Bellingham, WA. All in all my Dad and Travis both said it was a good trip. Not a ton of wildlife other than this guy

Photobucket

It's a wolf. The picture is pretty blurry and he has his back to the camera, but it's the best one they could get before it ran off.
But anyway, the trip was pretty smooth sailing to Haines and then again on the ferry. He said at times it was a bit boring on the ferry, but overall it was nice to just sit back and not worry about anything for 80 hours.

January 21st my mom, Dylan, and I boarded our plane for Seattle, a day before the guys were due to arrive off the ferry. We strategically planned our departure around Dylan's 'schedule' and I must say, it worked pretty well! By now Dylan is what I would consider a seasoned airplane passenger. This was his fourth or fifth time flying in his (at that time) not even two years of life. I believe I didn't go on my first plane ride until I was three. Anyway, this was only his second or third time having his own seat though and we discovered that he does not actually need to be strapped in his car seat in the seat of the plane, like an airline worker had previously stated. So we gate checked the car seat and he got to sit like a big boy on the plane seat. Man was he excited about that! He loved it! We showed him the wing of the plane and explained that we were in an airplane (which he LOOOVES airplanes). He kept staring at it saying, "plane, plane". I don't think he realized that we were IN that plane though. Anyway, the first five or so minutes were a bit rough and I thought, "Oh man, if this is any indication of how it's going to be, get me off of here!" He was just being whiney and almost nothing would make him happy. I can't remember exactly what it was that finally got him in a good mood, but we found something and from that moment on, he was great. He got at least half a dozen compliments from the people around us, which was nice.

He looks like he's looking out the window like, "What are you getting me into"

Doing some reading and not liking being interrupted!

We got to the hotel sometime around 3pm, so 2pm Alaska time which meant it wasn't too far past his normal nap time. So I put him in one of the beds, closed the curtains, and he slept. My mom went down to the lobby to work and I just laid in the bed next to him. He only slept for about 45 minutes though, when he woke up while re-adjusting himself and I think new he was in a strange place. He started fussing so I put him in the bed with me and he acted like he was going to fall asleep, but then he would whisper words in his Dylan language and look over at me all excited like, etc. I knew that he wasn't going to go back to sleep, so I gave up.

Bedtime was a different story. Anyone that knows my son, knows that he is very weird about falling asleep. He either needs to be in his own bed, lights out no distractions, etc., or in some sort of crib or pack n play. He has never been one to fall asleep in the bed with us. I guess maybe he had enough of that when he was a newborn sleeping on our chests every night? Anyway, I thought though, "I'm going to make this work. I've got this big ol' bed and he can sleep in it and cuddle with me for tonight, etc." I figured there was no need to get a crib because,"I got this!" WRONG!!!! I started trying to get him to sleep around 7pm that night. It was a bit earlier than he normally goes to sleep, but he lacked a lot of nap time so I figured it would be ok. He WOULD NOT fall asleep for ANYTHING! I don't know why I didn't just get up and go get a crib, it probably would've solved all of my problems, but I think I was just so determined to get him to sleep in that bed, that I didn't even think of that. He thought it was play time. He would talk to me, to himself, look over at my mom and talk to her. Whatever he could do to NOT sleep, he was doing it. I don't even know, I think it was around 11pm when he finally dozed off. But then everytime he would readjust himself (which was often), I heard him and was afraid that he was going to wake up and see me and not want to sleep, etc. so I got very little sleep. It was a bad night!
The next day the boys showed up with Trav's car and the UHAUL. We caught up and then headed to Lakewood (I think it was Lakewood?) to have an early dinner with some of my mom's family and my brother (he was in that area for a hockey tournament with the team he coaches). We went to Romano's Macaroni Grill in this mall area. It was good. I've never been and have always wanted to give it a try. Glad we did! Afterwards we walked leisurely around the mall (yep, all like 9 of us- looking like a tour group!) and found a seating area and just talked. We haven't seen this family in quite some time so it was nice visiting. We said our goodbyes to them and my cousin, Nikki sent us with some delicious zucchini bread and tons of travel magazines about New Mexico (thank you Nikki! It was so, so thoughtful of you and the bread was great!) and then we headed back to the hotel.
That night my parents got their own room and Travis and I got a CRIB! Oh what a lifesaver those cribs at hotels are! I know, it sounds a bit sketchy putting your child in a borrowed crib, but we try to always wipe it down first and put clean sheets on it and he's been fine so far (knocking on wood now).
The next day we went and had breakfast at this amazing breakfast place in downtown Seattle with my Dad's brother, Jim. I can't remember the name for the life of me, but it's a local place and the food was EXCELLENT (awesome choice Dad and Uncle Jim!). Seattle is such an amazing city with so much art and culture, and the old buildings everywhere and Pike's Place, and the people.... I just love it there. And I'm sure there are a million excellent places like this one, but all I know is that this one specifically, was delicious! Alaskan's, think Snow City but BETTER! It was that good! I will ask what the name is in case any of you happen to be in that area at any point. Anyway, we chatted with my Uncle Jim for a while and then my Dad and him took off in his vehicle (my dad was staying with him that night and heading back to AK the next day) and Trav, Dylan, my mom, and I headed out for our journey down to NM.

The drive to NM was a quick one. We thought we were going to have time to stop and do some exploring of the areas we were in and then take Dylan to Disneyland for his birthday when we got down to that area, etc. but unfortunately we had no extra time.....for anything. Right before we left Alaska we got a call from the housing office here on base saying they had some houses to show us and scheduled us an appointment for the 28th of Jan, which meant we needed to be here by the evening of the 27th (we didn't leave Seattle until the 23rd and remember- we were travelling with a two year old). I took it. We were told to expect about a 3-6 month wait for a house on base once we got here and the fact that they had some houses to show, was something I was not going to pass up for Disneyland. Because Disneyland will always be there, this house if I had taken a later date appointment, may not have been. It was really a bummer having to miss out on doing fun things, but in the end I do not regret the decision to do so.

So back to the roadtrip down. Since it was so quick and there wasn't a whole lot of time for extra stuff, this part should be brief. We stopped in Medford, OR the first night, Stockton, CA, Barstow, CA, Mesa Grande, AZ and then rolled into Alamogordo, NM on January 27th. All in all the trip down went pretty smooth. We had a few 'tiffs' but that's kind of to be expected when you put three adults with different personalities and a two year old with the patience of, well, a two year old in the same car together for four days. We ate mostly fast food because honestly, that's all we really ever had time for! The night we stayed in AZ, our hotel was on the same road as a Cracker Barrell (my mom's favorite restaurant) and we got there early enough (before Dylan would go into meltdown mode) to actually eat there. It was nice having a sit down dinner. Anyway, we stopped several times on the way down to let the dogs out, stretch our legs, change Dylan's diaper, get gas, get snacks, get lunch, etc. but other than that, we drove. There were even a few times when my mom and I did a quick stealth like diaper change from Dylan's carseat. Dangerous, I know, but we never unstrapped the chest part of his carseat and frankly, desperate times called for desperate measures!

Emergency diaper change!

Well, that was the roadtrip in a nutshell. Again, nothing special other than the time we got to spend with each other and seeing the uniqueness of the different towns we drove through. Oh, never go to Barstow, CA. It's a pit stop and that is ALL it has going for it. It was quite a creepy town. I can't explain it. I don't mean because it seemed like there was a lot of crime or anything there, it was just a weird place. Enough said.

My mom stayed at a hotel in Alamogordo and we stayed in TLF on base. She also rented a car so she could be mobile. It worked out very well because there was a day that Trav had to do in processing, so my mom, Dylan, I all got to pal around. Trav ended up getting some time off for househunting and to get settled, so we did just that....well, and a few other things. We got our house on the 28th. Travis didn't get to go sign the lease until the 29th and the house wasn't ready until that following Tuesday, but we got one none the less and without a 3-6 month wait, thank GOODNESS! Have you seen the housing options off base here? Yeah, until you do, you can't appreciate my excitement. There are hundreds of BEAUTIFUL houses up on the hillside, but they are all about twice what our housing allowance is. We kept saying, "Man, if only we had Alaska's BAH rate, we could be living like kings in those houses!" They are extremely beautiful homes. Homes that all the doctors, lawyers, and German's of Alamogordo probably live in. ***There is a German air force base on Holloman and they get overseas pay for their housing, which is RIDICULOUS for this area. Their housing pay works differently than the US Military. Their air force pays their landlords and mortage companies directly. So if they are alloted $2800 -which is roughly what I heard- for housing and their rent/mortage is only $1000, they don't get to pocket the rest like we would be able to. SO, they do the smart thing and rent/buy the best house they can to try to max out their allotment. Can't say that I blame them and I'm telling you, those houses are nice! Some of them are I admit, just standard and probably not QUITE twice our housing allowance, but they are still in a very nice area and are pretty nice. The other ones though, are AMAZING! And really compared to what you would probably pay for them in AK, the prices on them aren't too steep, but just steep enough for us to not be able to afford with our pay rate down here. The ones we could afford- well, lets just say that they are not an option for us.
So anyway, before we were able to move into our house, during our 'getting settled' time, we all four went to Las Cruces to explore and eat lunch (definitely appreciative of having that city within 45 minutes of us. It has absolutely everything I need to feel like I'm in a real city, and then some), went to Roswell to see aliens (there aren't any there btw), White Sands National Monument (very cool place!), Cloudcroft (a cute little town in the mountains, with shops and skiing in the winter- reminded me of of AK), and then off to El Paso to say goodbye to my mom. We got to El Paso the day before my mom left. Got a hotel and then had dinner with our friend, Nick (Uncle "Kick" to Dylan) who was stationed in Alaska with Travis. He's now stationed at Ft. Bliss which is nice to have him close (even though he's been gone on TDY's more than he's been there since we've been here, but it's still nice knowing he's only just over an hour away). We had arranged for my car to be picked up from Dallas by a third party and delivered to us at home and he wasn't supposed to arrive until the day we got back from El Paso, but as we were about twenty minutes from El Paso, he called to say he was about three to four hours from there and would be at Holloman shortly after that. So, we just had him drop it off there at the hotel that night. The next morning my mom and I went out and got some things for her flight back home while Trav and Dylan stayed at the hotel. By the time we got back to the hotel, it was time to pack up and head out. We had time to have lunch before dropping my mom off, so we went to Olive Garden!!!!! Soup, salad, and breadsticks combo here we come!!!! I love Olive Garden! I don't recall that I've ever really ordered a MEAL, but I love eating that combo and an appetizer. Oh so good! Anyway, after that it was time to drop my mom off. The reality that I would be saying goodbye to my mom for who knew how long and that we were REALLY going to be living in different places from now on, did not hit me until the moment I got out of the car to see her off and give her hugs. I hugged her for a very long time and cried and sniffled on her shoulder. It was hard. I've said it before to some of you, but the hardest part is, knowing that Dylan can't see her and she can't see him anymore. They're buddies you know. And he's the biggest reason any of this has been hard really. I know he's so young and won't remember any of this when he gets older, but right now, in this moment he knows he's not seeing his best friend, Autumn, his cousin Brandon, and his Nana and Papa, that he is so used to seeing on such a regular basis. And randomly things happen that make me sad for him. Like one day we were at the McDonald's playland and this mom kept calling for her daughter, Autumn. Everytime she said her name Dylan would look around half with excitement and half with concern. It took everything I had to hold back those tears that welled up in my eyes. I just wish he was able to understand why we don't see those people anymore. It's getting better everyday though.

Dylan's sweet new wheels. A birthday present from Nana & Papa- this car is no joke and when he runs over your bare feet with it, the verbiage used is not always gonna be pretty!

My two favorite boys, outside Cracker Barrell- again. I mentioned it's my mom's favorite restaurant, right?

Eating dinner in El Paso with Uncle "Kick". Man, we really need to do something about keeping Dylan's hair groomed!

So we said our tearful goodbyes and went back to pick up my car that had been delivered to me the night before (SOOOO happy to see my car btw! I had been w/out it for about 5 weeks and I missed it so, so much!). Trav drove Dylan back home in his car while I followed in mine. I had a good, solid 85 miles to get reaquainted with it and it was nice!

So that was February 3rd. Since then we've just been getting adjusted to life down here. We got our furniture delivered that very next day (the 4th) and got pretty much all of the boxes unpacked by the end of the weekend. There are still to this day a few miscellanous items that I haven't quite figured out what I'm doing with, but for the most part we are unpacked. And because this house is a bit bigger than our last, there are things here that we needed (and still ned), that we didn't in our last house. Or like because we had our tv mounted in our last house and we're choosing not to do that here, we still need to find a tv stand. Decisions like that determine which direction to go in decorating this place and because I get so overwhelmed trying to decorate, the walls are still bare and it's been a slow process to say the least! Rome wasn't built in a day though, so yeah.....

Anyway, we've made a trip or two to Las Cruces to shop or whatever and a trip to El Paso to hit up the outlet mall, but other than that we have stayed pretty close to home. Again, just getting settled and relaxing after months of moving out of one house and into another temporary one, driving down here, living in TLF, unpacking, etc. We do have a list of things want to and are going to go do though. Some of them are relatively close and some, not so much. We are waiting for the snow to stop in the mountains so we can go back up to Cloudcroft to shop in the little town and have lunch, I'd like to go to the Ruidoso Downs horse track to watch some races this summer, we want to go to Albuquerque for a weekend and if we don't make it this summer, we will for sure be up there in October for the Balloon Festival (thank you Lisa for telling me about it!!! I'm really looking forward to it!), we will be going to Hatch in September for the Chili Festival as long as we are in town, we are going to take a vacation to Arkansas around the 4th of July to see Trav's family, most likely be going to either Colorado or St. Louis for a 50th anniversary/family reunion for my grandparents in September, Christmas with Trav's family hopefully, Dylan and I will be trying to make it to AK for my Dad's 50th birthday in January, and then next Feb/March Trav and I are looking at going on a cruise- by ourselves (yipee!). Between all of that, I'm hoping that family and friends will come visit US as often as possible! You're always welcome!

Other than that, we are getting used to life down here. Travis is loving his job. He actually gets to do the work he signed up for the military to do. And starting this week he got put on a barrier crew, which he loves doing. He missed it big time when he moved out of his CE squadron in AK. He's been going in at 530, which makes for a very early day, but he gets off at 230 which I love! Dylan I think is getting more and more aware of the fact that this is home. Things are becoming a little more routine for us like they were before we moved out of our house in Alaska, which is good for him. Kids strive when they have routines and get completely out of whack when their routines get messed up (regardless of what some people may think- or at least that's how it is with Dylan). We've been going on walks or to the gym with Amber and her kids in the morning and before Trav's new shift, by ourselves after Dylan got up from his nap (Amber was my dear friend Cherish's next door neighbor in AK. I had met her a few times before they got stationed here and it's been a God send to have her here! For my sake because I feel like I have a little piece of home here and of course a friend, and for Dylan's because he's had friends to play with.....thank you Amber for welcoming us right into your life! You are truly appreciated!). Some days we have errands to run in town and others we just stick close to home and go on our walks and let Dylan and Amber's kids play at the playgrounds.

The weather here has been for the most part phenomenal! I'm talking blue skies for miles without a cloud in sight and during the day anywhere from high 50's to low 70's. There have been days though that would be beautiful, but the spring winds make it feel cold. I was told that these winds are common during the spring and fall time, but in the summer they stop- and then it's 100 degrees and you wish there were winds! Anyway, we've been enjoying our dinners outside on the patio a couple times a week and Travis and I have been trying some local wines with dinner (mostly just on the weekends due to Trav's early schedule and because a couple glasses give us a little buzz!). We've started our firepit up a few times after the sun goes down and just sipped our wine, watch Dylan play until it's his bedtime, and then call it a night! I've always been a fan of being able to sit outside in warmth and just relaxing and I love that we can do that here, almost year round!
Trav has a two night excercise coming up the first week in April, where they will be sleeping in the desert and then after that he will be going to Sheppard AFB, TX for school/training for three weeks. He will be leaving here on probably the 11th and then will get done on the 3rd of May, so long as he doesn't fail out early! Praying he doesn't. This school should finish up his Associates and then he will probably be putting in a packet to become an instructor at Sheppard. He can start putting in the packet now, but he can't be considered until he's been here at least a year. Just something he's been looking into doing and I'm hoping that if it's what he ultimately decides on, that it works out. I would love to be at Sheppard. I don't know much about Witchita Falls, TX but I do know that it's only about 6 hours from his Dad's house which would be so nice!
Anyway, while Trav is gone, Dylan and I MAY be making a trip up to Alaska. We'll see how it works out though and I will keep you posted.

Dylan and the dogs all say hi! Oh, the dogs! I've barely mentioned them! In a nutshell, they love it here. They love going out in the backyard and sitting in the hot sun. And they love going on walks around the neighborhood. There are like two or three spots where our ground is not level with the fence in the backyard, so Scrappy has been trying to escape, but other than that, I think it's been good for them here! Dylan's become obsessed with them lately and chases them around the house. Sometimes it's hard for them to find a safe place, but they do just fine!

Okay, so I think that pretty much covers us! Thanks to those of you who stuck around to read the whole thing and to those of you who didn't, boo to you! I promise from now on the blogs will mostly be pictures and quick summaries of our day to days....
Miss you all tons!
Closing with pictures we took at the zoo last weekend....

I think all the kids had a meeting to decide to push the dirt in this hole. I tried not getting them in the pictures because I didn't want to look like a creepy person getting pics with random kids in it, but there were like four kids sitting around piling dirt into this hole! Anyway....
